Having only moved to the Portuguese side this summer for £3m, Talisca has already caught the attention of Mourinho after a number of excellent performances.

Netting three times in five games the Brazilian has helped his new side climb to the top of the Primeira Liga.

There are already a number of Talisca’s compatriots at the West London club, including Oscar, Ramires, Willian, and Filipe Luis. Chelsea also have a long standing transfer history with Benfica, having signed both David Luiz and Nemanja Matic from the Portuguese giants.

It seems that Mourinho was already aware of the player before he came to Europe, but was aware there could have been problems bringing him to the Premier League.

“I think Benfica hired well. They say Talisca is unknown, but he is only so unknown because he’s only not playing in England because he doesn’t have a work permit. If he had one, he would be here,” Mourinho said.

“There were many English teams, great teams and important, that wanted him. Moreover, there were those who wanted to sign him, even though he could not play for now.”

“They wanted to sign him, put him in a minor league [on loan] and hope that eventually he came to be selected [for the Brazilian national team], and would consequently then get the work permit.”

Mourinho already has a number of attacking midfielders, but the former Real Madrid manager likes to have plenty of depth in his squad. He is also perfectly capable of being ruthless and getting rid of any player he sees as dead weight if a better option comes along.

Chelsea will meet Benfica’s domestic rivals Sporting Lisbon tonight in the Champions League. They have started the league very well, thanks in large part to Mourinho’s fantastic signings this summer.

Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas already look like they could fire the Blues to the title, and if he does go in for Talisca next summer then Mourinho will be hoping he starts his Premier League career just as brightly.
