The next series of Homeland won’t arrive for bloomin’ ages – until January 2017, to be precise – but it sounds like it’ll be worth the seven-month wait.

Claire Danes’ CIA thriller is moving to New York for series six, which will be set in the period between a US presidential election day and the subsequent inaugaration day.

Because showrunner Alex Gansa’s likes Homeland to reflect hot political topics, the long break before the next series is necessary so writers get a ‘longer prep time for breaking stories’ and can feed what’s really happening in the US into the scripts.

And seeing as the US election isn’t until November 8 this year, this makes total sense. Who knows, maybe a Donald Trump-like character will crop up in the next series.

The show has already been renewed for a seventh and eighth series, too. It’ll need some Game Of Thrones-style stamina, then.

David Nevins, CEO of US channel Showtime, told Deadline: ‘Under Alex Gansa’s brilliant leadership, Homeland has shown an uncanny ability to reinvent itself which makes us supremely confident that this show will remain as distinctive, relevant and cutting edge as anything on television for as long as these producers want to continue.’

When asked how long Homeland will go on for, he added: ‘It’s changing itself pretty dramatically each season; I think more than most, this show has an open-ended expiration date. That said, I’ve been focused on getting this deal done and not really asking what happens beyond this deal.’

Meanwhile the fate of Rupert Friend’s character Quinn remains unclear after he was seen lying in a hospital bed with severe brain damage at the end of the last series.

Nevins previously said of Quinn that ‘if he should live, it will not be in any way, shape, or form the way he has lived to date.’

Luckily Friend is having a much better time in real life after revealing he secretly married Paralypmpic athlete Aimee Mullins last month.
