Wynona (Nono) Marks Holmes

HOLMES Memorial services celebrating the life of early Edmond resident, Wynona (Nono) Marks Holmes (Mrs. Howard C.), will be held at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 2717 W. Hefner Rd., at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 25, 1998. Born June 22, 1903 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Territory, to L.W. and Sadie Marks, Wynona died in her home in NW Oklahoma City, Ok., Wednesday, April 22, 1998. During her childhood years, she resided in Edmond. Wynona attended Edmond Public Schools and Central Normal after which she taught school in Clinton, Ok. She married Howard Cecil Holmes October 19, 1924 in Edmond Ok., and they celebrated their 73rd anniversary last October. The family's principal residences have been in NW Oklahoma City and in the west Edmond-Deer Creek areas, where their children attended schools in both OKC and Deer Creek. Collectively, her children were enrolled for 19 consecutive years at the University of Oklahoma. Wynona is preceded in death her parents, 2 sisters, and five brothers. She is survived by her husband, Howard C. Holmes of the residence; two sisters, Joyce Eshelman, Phoenix, AZ, and Berta Lee Winston, Lawrence, KS; six children, Howard Wynn Holmes and wife Betty Jean of Broken Arrow, OK, Cecilia Springall Cole and Husband James, OKC, Ok., Virginia (Ginny) O'Leary, Lawton, Ok., Philip Holmes and wife Patricia, Edmond OK, Lee Holmes and wife Len, OKC, OK, and Tim Holmes, Edmond, Ok.; 17 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and her special caregiver, Ann Luu. Her children were grateful for the many years that Wynona had good health, an alert mind and a sense of humor that enabled her to entertain with her many jokes. She was a member of The OKC Republican Women's Club, The Scandanavian Club, The Oklahoma Pilot's Association, The Carefree Rose Garden Club, Monday Bridge, Salvation Army Auxiliary and the Oklahoma County Farm Club. Because of her love for children, and the way she was able to touch the hearts and lives of so many children over the years, in lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorial contributions be made to the Children's Convalescent Center at 6800 NW Expressway, OKC 73008, or the Exchange Club Child Abuse Center at 415 NW 5th, OKC 73102.
