Denver’s coroner on Monday identified the 29-year-old man slain in a shooting Saturday night in the city’s Montbello neighborhood.

Varnell Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting near the intersection of Albrook Drive and Peoria Street.

The medical examiner’s office said he died of multiple gunshot wounds and that his manner of death was homicide.

Police spokesman Doug Schepman said investigators had no updates on the case and that a suspect or suspects have neither been identified nor arrested.

Police said the shooting happened after an altercation between two groups broke out on the south end of a nearby shopping center and moved north toward an RTD park-n-Ride.

Nate Currey, RTD spokesman, said Jenkins was shot about 20 feet from a bus around 5:30 p.m. Jenkins, who was alone, tried to crawl back toward the bus after he was shot.

Sonny Jackson, another police spokesman, said investigators do not believe Jenkins was a passenger on the bus, but may have gotten on the bus briefly and then off again.
