NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Jul 21, 2016) - When considering a cosmetic surgical procedure such as liposuction, it is imperative that patients conduct an extensive amount of research and learn about every facet of treatment prior to making their decision to proceed with surgery, states Dr. Daniel Y. Maman, a board certified plastic surgeon in New York City. Doing so enables individuals to know what to expect during every stage of care, he continues, ultimately leading to a smoother treatment process and higher rate of satisfaction.

According to the NYC plastic surgeon, one of the best ways to become extensively educated on liposuction (or any other procedure) is to ask questions. At 740 Park Plastic Surgery, Dr. Maman says he and his colleague -- Dr. Stafford R. Broumand -- welcome any number of inquiries their patients may have throughout the consultation process. Regarding liposuction, he notes that two of the most frequently asked questions are:

  • How many areas can be treated in a single liposuction session?

  • Are the results achieved with liposuction permanent?

In regard to the first query, Dr. Maman explains that a set limit on the number of problematic areas that can be treated during one liposuction session does not exist. Instead, the exact amount is determined by each individual's anatomical indicators. "For instance," he writes in a recent blog post, "someone who has a relatively smaller build with less fat might be able to have each of their problem areas addressed during one treatment, while a person who is larger in stature may need multiple sessions to safely extract the appropriate quantity of fat from the desired areas."

Concerning whether or not liposuction results are permanent, Dr. Maman says, "Yes, the fat reduction results attained with liposuction can be permanent, but only if the individual leads a relatively healthy lifestyle consisting of a balanced diet and regular exercise following their procedure." During liposuction, he notes that a certain percentage of fat cells in the targeted region are removed, leaving behind only a fraction of the original amount. These residual cells will not grow in number; however, they may expand in size should a significant amount of weight be gained postoperatively. Conversely, he explains that leftover fat cells can also shrink in size in the event considerable weight is lost postsurgically. For these reasons, the NYC plastic surgeon reiterates the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in order to prolong the effects of treatment.

Ultimately, these are simply two of the many questions that patients should be asking to learn more about liposuction, advises Dr. Maman. "Whatever the procedure may be," he says, "I encourage my patients to ask anything and everything that comes to mind. Plastic surgery is a major, potentially life-changing decision, and having a comprehensive understanding of one's prospective treatment plays an essential role in ensuring the most beneficial procedure is performed, and that an ideal outcome is achieved."
