Pelican Brewing opening new brewpub in former home of The Bay House

Pelican Brewing, the award-winning brewery based in Pacific City on the Oregon Coast, this week announced it would open a new brewpub in Lincoln City, the fourth site for the brewery that began on the sands at Cape Kiwanda.

The new Pelican will take over the former home of The Bay House, a popular restaurant on the Siletz Bay. The Bay House is planning to relocate and expand to another site nearby, adding overnight lodging.

“We are in the planning stages of designing an innovative new brewpub that will bring a unique dining option to Lincoln City and we are delighted to follow the incredible legacy of The Bay House restaurant at this beautiful site on the coast — we wish them well as they expand their hospitality offerings,” says Mary Jones, founder and owner of Pelican Brewing.

Pelican is working with design firm EDG and Portland-based Jones Architecture to redesign the space, which will include a pilot brewhouse, like its other pubs. They hope to break ground in early 2020 and open in early 2021.

Pelican opened its original brewpub in 1996 on the sands of Cape Kiwanda. It has a second restaurant and brewery in Cannon Beach and a tasting room/pub at its production brewery in Tillamook.

Pelican also said it planned to expand that production brewery, which can produce 40,000 barrels a year, to allow capacity of about 100,000 barrels. It is adding a 90-barrel line to complement the existing 30-barrel line, which it will continue to use to develop new recipes.

“It is very important for us to remain flexible and innovative as we grow,” says Jim Prinzing, Pelican CEO. “The expansion plan we are bringing together allows us to grow capacity to stay ahead of the demand curve but also gives us the agility that we need to continue brewing a ready supply of small batch, barrel aged, and experimental beers that our fans love.”

Portland Fresh Hops Festival coming to Oaks Amusement Park

Fresh-hop season is cascading all around us (see what I did there?), and the 16th annual Portland Fresh Hops Festival is set next weekend to bring you the biggest collection of fresh-hop beers in Oregon.

The festival, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28, at Oaks Amusement Park, features more than 60 fresh hop beers from throughout the state. The event this year offers some new attractions, including “The Cone Wars,” a competition featuring a collaborations of hop farms paired with breweries to see which team can create the best fresh-hop beer – with the winner being determined by the crowd.

Fresh-hop brewing – hops must be used within 24 hours of harvest – can create some entertaining logistical challenges, which will be discussed during the Friday night Bines and Brewers event. Brewers, including Breakside brewmaster Ben Edmunds, will share stories and challenges of their fresh-hop brewing experiences.

  • Where: Oaks Amusement Park, 7805 S.E. Oaks Park Way
  • When: 5-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, noon-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.
  • Tickets: Admission free Saturday; tasting package is $20, includes souvenir glass and eight tickets. Limited Friday evening tickets are $25, including tasting package. Limited Friday/Saturday combo tickets are $35. Additional drink tickets available at event. Tickets available online.
