Unatego shuts down Delhi, rolls into MAC final

Morgan Newman led all scorers with 14 points as No. 2 Unatego defeated third-seeded Delhi, 56-22, in the Midstate Athletic Conference semifinals on Monday night.

The Spartans used a 22-3 run in the second quarter to create an insurmountable 33-11 lead at halftime.

Newman, a senior, made five field goals and went 4-for-4 from the foul line to total 14 points.

Dana Stepp scored six points with 11 steals while Jen Faulkner had two points and nine rebounds off the bench. Meghan Perry and Morgan Perry scored eight and 12 points, respectively, and Alexa Lucia had eight points.

Anna Post scored 13 points for Delhi as the only Bulldog player to score more than three.

Unatego travels to SUNY Binghamton on Friday for the MAC championship against top-seeded Bainbridge-Guilford. Tip is 8 p.m.

Downsville 45, Davenport 34

Sisters Kailee Young and Kerry Young both recorded double-doubles to lead No. 5 Downsville past No. 6 Davenport in the Delaware League mini tournament.

Kailee Young, a junior, made five field goals and five foul shots to lead all scorers with 15 points, also recording 12 rebounds. Kerry Young, a freshman, also had 12 rebounds along with 10 points.

Olivia Brunner scored 10 and Luccia Martucci had six for the Eagles.

Justine Lubbers scored 14 points on six field goals to lead Davenport. Jenna Lubbers and Kayla Beers had eight each for the Wildcats.

Both teams await section seeding information.

Hunter-Tannersville 47, Gilboa 36

Sasha Gazoorian hit six 3-pointers to send No. 4 Hunter-Tannersville past third-seeded Gilboa in the DL.

Gazoorian hit six of her seven field goals from beyond the arc to lead all scorers with 20 points. Jayden Lewis followed with 12 points on six field goals for H-T.

Hailie Shultis recorded the team-high for the Wildcats, hitting two 3-pointers and scoring nine points.

Cassidy Miller hauled in 10 rebounds, and also scored six points for Gilboa. 

Deposit/Hancock 41, Unadilla Valley 38

Laycee Drake scored 22 points as Deposit/Hancock defeated Unadilla Valley in the MAC.

Drake made nine field goals for her game-high 22. Haleigh Weyrauch contributed eight points and Bryn Martin had four for D/H.

Shelby Meade had 16 rebounds with eight points for UV. Kyleigh George scored a team-high 12 points while Sophie Off had seven.

UV plays on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.

Roxbury 33, Margaretville 26

Emma Hynes led Roxbury as the eight-seeded Rockets defeated No. 7 Margaretville in the DL.

Hynes made three field goals, one of them a 3-pointer, and went 4-for-4 from the foul line to lead all scorers with 11 points.

Destiny Proctor and Erin Garza contributed eight points each for the Rockets, outscoring Margaretville, 15-2, in the second quarter.

Natalia Herrera led the Blue Devils with eight points.

Margaretville finishes the season at 4-14, 2-6.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Margaretville 57, Jefferson 56

Billy Miller’s 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds remaining lifted Margaretville over Jefferson on Monday in the DL.

“It was a wild finish,” Margaretville coach John Bernhardt said.

“I told them we had a lot to prove after the South Kortright game and we did.”

The Blue Devils fell to SK, 86-27, in the league semifinals.

Margaretville junior varsity call-up Mike Gavette hit his first varsity basket, a 3-pointer, to put his team ahead in the final minute.

Jefferson’s Cole Lapinel scored to regain the lead with 18.1 seconds left, but Miller responded with the game-winner.

Miller and Lapinel tied for the game high with 24 points each.

Curtis Roberts scored 12 points for the Blue Devils and Connor Joedicke added seven.

Noah Smith had 11 points for the J-Hawks and Clyde Cole had nine.

Morris 80, Brookfield 75

Morris bounced back from a loss in Saturday’s Tri-Valley League final, using 29 points from Matt Murphy to beat Brookfield, 80-75, in a non-league clash.

Morris’ Nate Edwards surpassed 20 for the Mustangs as well, making eleven shots on his way to 25 points. He also had six blocks.

Eight seniors were honored before the game, including Tyler Kopp, who hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points.

Morris (16-3, 11-2) awaits seeding and its opponent for the section tournament, set to begin next week.

Davenport 70, Roxbury 57

Greg Zuill led all scorers with 19 points as No. 5 Davenport topped No. 7 Roxbury in the DL mini tournament.

Zuill knocked down three 3-pointers for Davenport. A 91 percent free-throw shooter, Zuill also made 6-of-6 from the foul line.

Warren Quigley also hit three shots from distance and scored 12 points for the Wildcats.

Nick Cross hit four shots from behind the arc and finished with 16 points to tie for Roxbury’s team high with Isaac Walker. Jared Davis also reached double figures with 10.

Stamford 52, Windham 32

Sixth-seeded Stamford defeated No. 8 Windham in the DL.

Stamford opened the game with a four-point lead, but after a defensive change in the second quarter, it stretched its lead to 14 entering the second half.

“We were a little sluggish at the start, but then we switched to man-to-man and held them in check from then on,” Stamford coach Mike Brown said.

Dan Olson led the Indians with 15 points and five steals.

Teammate Brent Ogborn recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. He also had three blocks.

“In the majority of games this year he [Ogborn] has produced a double-double,” Brown said.

“He’s usually the biggest guy and he’s skilled. He’s just a workhorse underneath.”

Joe Lane led Windham with 16 points. Brian VanValin finished with six while both Sean Coughlin and Keith Hewitt had four points.

Stamford ends its season with a 7-13 record.

Richfield Springs 64, Remsen 54

Richfield Springs bench players scored 34 of the team’s 44 points in the second half of a non-league win over Remsen.

The RS reserves scored 23 of 25 points as the Indians outscored Remsen, 25-13, in the third quarter to create a 16-point advantage.

Brady Young scored 12 points in a reserve role to lead the Indians. He also recorded six rebounds and five assists.

Marcus Hammont scored eight points and had eight rebounds for the Indians. Jake Bennett scored 11 points while Bretten House had eight.

Hunter Jones (16) and Adam Jones (14) combined for 30 points to lead Remsen (9-11).

The Indians (9-11) await section tournament seedings.
