Canceled due to illness: UAB Piano Series presents Sahun Hong Jan. 28

The concert with Sahun Hong has been canceled and will not be rescheduled this semester.

The UAB Piano Series, presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music, brings the world’s finest pianists to Birmingham. Professor of Piano and Artist-in-Residence Yakov Kasman, a Van Cliburn medalist, directs the series. 

Hong brings his colorful style and riveting energy to the solo, chamber and concerto stage. On the program for Hong’s performance are Beethoven’s Sonata in F major, Op. 10 No. 2; Chopin’s Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35; Leon Kirchner’s “Interlude II” (2003); and Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13.

On the roster of Young Steinway Artists since 2010, Hong has been featured as a guest soloist with the ORF Vienna, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Camerata New York, Fort Worth, Richardson, Racine, Waco, Galveston and Brazos Valley symphony orchestras. His performances in prestigious venues include at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, the Goldener Saal and Brahms-Saal at the Vienna Musikverein, Merkin Hall, Église de Verbier, and The Kennedy Center.

He was most recently the winner ex aequo of the 2017 Vendome Prize at Verbier, and received second prize at the 2017 International Beethoven Competition Vienna. He was a finalist for the 2017 American Pianists Awards.

The performance is set for 4 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall. Tickets are $15 general admission.

An avid chamber musician, Hong is the pianist of Trio St. Bernard with violinist Brandon Garbot and cellist Zachary Mowitz. He has participated in festivals such as Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, Chamber Music Encounters at Lincoln Center and the Taos School of Music. His recent collaborations include performances with Colin Carr, Ara Gregorian, Emanuel Gruber, Hsin-Yun Huang, Michael Kannen, Ani Kavafian, Ida Kavafian, Daniel Phillips, Steven Tenenbom and the Pacifica Quartet.

Hong graduated at age 16 magna cum laude from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance, studying with John Owings. He is currently a student of Leon Fleisher in the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.

Pianist Kenneth Broberg, 2017 Van Cliburn Silver medalist, will close the 2017-2018 UAB Piano Series with a performance Sunday, April 8. Broberg has won first prizes at the Hastings and Dallas international piano competitions, in addition to medals at the Sydney, Seattle, New Orleans and Wideman competitions. Several of his performances at the 2016 Sydney International Piano Competition were released on CD. He has performed as soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Dallas Chamber Symphony and the Louisiana Philharmonic, among others. Broberg has had solo, chamber and concerto performances broadcast on NPR and ABC (Australia) radio.
