Klaassen left Everton to become Werder’s club-record signing.
New Werder Bremen signing Davy Klaassen has aimed a thinly-veiled dig at Everton when speaking to German newspaper Bild, by stating that he needs to play regular football in order to maximise his potential.
The 25-year-old became the Bundesliga outfit’s club-record signing this summer when he opted to end his Everton nightmare and join Werder in a deal worth £12.1million.
Klaassen moved to Everton last summer after captaining Ajax to the Europa League final, but his £25million move proved to be one of The Toffees’ worst transfers in the history of their club – managing just seven Premier League outings.
Now at Werder, Klaassen believes he has found the right club to showcase his talents and stated that if a club wants to get the best out of him – they need to play him regularly, something Everton did not do.
“With Werder I found the right club. There are some who think it is a step backwards. But not for me. For me it is crucial that I play. That the style of play suits me. This is the case,” Klaassen said.
“In addition, Bremen is still a big club, even if the past few years did not always go well. Nobody wants to play for places 12, 13 or 14. It’s going to be tough, but it’s doable. We want to finally play international again with Werder.”
Klaassen, who had a hand in 93 goals in just 180 games for Ajax – 55 scored, 38 assists – has signed a four-year contract with Werder and is set to make his debut for the club on Saturday.
The Bundesliga outfit face German minnows Wormatia in the Cup before beginning their league campaign on August 25 as they welcome Hannover 96.
