PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate at Riverside Regional Jail has died after officials found him in his cell unresponsive late Saturday night.

According to Captain Laura E. Gray, 27-year-old Joseph McAlpine from Surry County was found unresponsive in his cell by jail staff members around 11:30 p.m.

The staff members performed CPR on McAlpine until Prince George EMS personnel arrived and took over. The attempts to save his life were unsuccessful.

The Prince George County Police Department is investigating the death, but officials say it appears to be a suicide. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.

McAlpine was being held at the jail for felony charges including proposing a sexual act to a child under 15 years of age through communications systems and enticing a minor to perform in pornography.
