Nicolaus (Nic) H. Anderson

Nicolaus H. Anderson, 73, of Breezy Point, died peacefully in the presence of his family on Thursday, July 26, 2018, due to complications of congestive heart failure. Nic was born in Brainerd, MN on April 15, 1945, to R.K. (Bob) and Eleanor Anderson. After graduating from Washington High School in 1963, he attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Education. As a member of the fraternity Acacia while at OSU, Nic met his future wife of 52 years, Joan Ledbetter. Following graduation, Nic and Joni relocated to Breezy Point in 1969. Nic was dedicated to education and lifelong learning, as evidenced by his 36 year career teaching History, Civics and Geography at Pequot Lakes High School, from which he retired in 2005. During his career at PLHS he went on to earn a Master's degree from Bemidji State University. He also coached and refereed football, and taught post-secondary courses through Lake Superior College. Nic served as President of the Pequot Lakes Educators Association, and was a lead negotiator for the Pequot Lakes School. He was active in Breezy Point City Government for 18 years, including two terms as Mayor, and many years as a planning and zoning commissioner and city council member. Nic enjoyed traveling, pool league, golf, poker nights with friends, and meeting new people during his summers as a bartender at the Commander, and later as a ranger at Breezy Point Golf Course. He is survived by his wife, Joni Anderson; daughter, Nicole Berns (Andrew); sisters Mary Anderson Eno and Susan Anderson-Khleif, and brother Rex Anderson; brother-in-law Mike Ledbetter (Kathleen); and many loving friends and family members. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Nic's life at an open house gathering at the Pelican Lakes Conservation Club (8922 Thrane Drive, Breezy Point) on Sunday, August 26, from 2-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pequot Lakes Schools via the Patriot Foundation: patriot-foundation.org, or checks to Initiative Foundation-Patriot, 405 First St SE, Little Falls, MN 56345.
