Apparently William B. Crews, a public affairs specialist for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has had another identity. And it’s not Batman or Hannah Montana.
Nope, according to Lachlan Markay reporting for The Daily Beast, Crews is “streiff,” a Managing Editor at RedState. So, it seems like there are two live Crews. RedState describes itself as the “the leading conservative, political news blog for right of center activists.” Of course, many blogs probably describe themselves as “the leading” since few would call themselves “the middle of the pack” or “the kind of average” blog.
The name “streiff” is clearly a pseudonym. After all, if you Google “streiff,” you’ll get things like Hallermann-Streiff Syndrome and Streiff, the horse of Gustavus Adolphus at the 1632 Battle of Lützen. It’s unlikely that a reincarnated horse has written things like, “I think we’re at the point where it is safe to say that the entire Wuhan virus scare was nothing more or less than a massive fraud perpetrated upon the American people by ‘experts’ who were determined to fundamentally change the way the country lives and is organized and governed.” Yes, “streiff” called the Covid-19 coronavirus that has already killed over 200,000 Americans nothing more than a “massive fraud.” Holy conspiracy theory, Batman. How does that make you feel if a friend or family member of yours has died from Covid-19?
Of course, such conspiracy theories have been all too common during the pandemic, as I have written previously for Forbes. What makes this blog different is that it may be under Crews control, so to speak. Crews has served as a public affairs specialist at the institute that Anthony Fauci, MD, directs. Yet, as Markay’s article indicated, Crews (assuming that he is “streiff”) doesn’t seem too fond of Fauci. Just look at a July RedState post from “streiff” entitled, “Anthony Fauci Just Praised Andrew Cuomo’s Slaughter of Vulnerable New Yorkers, Is He a Partisan Hack or Is He Actually an Idiot?” Hmmm, “are you a hack or are you an idiot” is not something you tend to tell a boss whom you like. Such words could kind of cause some strife, so to speak.
The post included lines such as, “the nation and the Trump administration were failed at every turn by the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci.” It also said, “While one can never get entirely away from the gut feeling that Fauci is in this to torpedo President Trump as much as he is to fight the virus, there are other indications that he simply doesn’t know what he’s doing.” However, the blog post didn’t really offer any clear evidence that Fauci has been trying to “torpedo” Trump.
Then, there was this statement about face masks: “Fauci was against masks because they are known to be ineffective as they are currently being used. His opposition lasted right up to the point where President Trump became a known mask skeptic and proving Trump wrong became more critical to the left than lives or science or the US economy.” Furthermore, the blog post claims that “there is zero evidence, other than bald assertions, that the lockdowns, and face masks, and hysteria had any more effect than sacrificing a chicken to the Moon God.” Saying that there is zero evidence behind masks and social distancing is like saying that roasted chicken has zero calories.

So if the Covid-19 coronavirus happens to be in this “stuff” that’s leaving your nose mouth when you cough, sneeze, talk, or sing “MMMBop” then less of it may get out into the open air to infect others.
Speaking of the Covid-19 coronavirus, streiff’s blog posts don’t seem to use any of the proper terminology for the SARS-CoV2, but instead call it the “Wuhan virus,” “Chinese Lung Aids,” or simply “Wuhan.” Chinese lung aids? Really?
Looks like Crews won’t be having one of his identities for much longer. According to Lenny Bernstein, Elahe Izadi, and Jeremy Barr reporting for the Washington Post, Crews will soon retire after the revelation that he is streiff. Perhaps being a public affairs specialist at NIAID wasn’t the best fit as a job. After all, don’t career counselors typically tell you to find a job that fits your beliefs and personality? They don’t tend to say that you should choose a job in which you will have to assume a pseudonym to then anonymously do the exact opposite of what you are supposed to be doing in your job. That would be a bit like working in a wildlife preserve when you really hate animals.
