WILDERVILLE, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police have identified two troopers involved in a fatal southern Oregon shooting after they responded to a domestic disturbance call in rural Josephine County.

Lt. Bill Fugate says 55-year-old Robert Box was fatally wounded late Friday night after the troopers responded to a call near Wilderville, about 10 miles southwest of Grants Pass. State police say 23-year-old Kelsie Box had called 911 to say that her father, Robert Box, was physically assaulting her.

Troopers Heather West and Gregor Smyth met in the driveway with Robert Box, who was armed with a handgun. A short time later, they told dispatchers that shots had been fired and Box was down. A handgun was recovered.

Box was taken to a hospital where he was soon pronounced dead. The troopers were unhurt.

They have been placed on leave while the shooting is investigated.
