Hwy 65 crash kills 29-year-old woman

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to the crash, reported at 1:11 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, in Brunswick Township, north of Mora.

BRUNSWICK TOWNSHIP — A 29-year-old Willow River woman died Wednesday, June 22, after her vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a transit van driven by a Brainerd man on Highway 65.

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to the crash, reported at 1:11 p.m. in Brunswick Township in Kanabec County, south of Mora. According to the report, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix was northbound on the highway when it crossed into the southbound lane near Legend Street, striking a 2015 Ford Transit.

The driver of the Pontiac, Rachel Joy Johnson, suffered fatal injuries in the collision. The driver of the Ford, Gerald Nicholas Villella, 58, of Brainerd, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Welia Health-Mora Hospital.

The state patrol reported Johnson wore a seat belt and Villella did not. The road was dry at the time.

Assisting at the scene were the Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office, the Mora Fire Department and Welia Ambulance.
