Day in History: Selective Service to induct 42 registrants

1991 – 25 years ago

• Rochester's Mike Rossi took first in the heavyweight supertwins division of a motorcycle racing event in Grotten, Mich. Rossi rides a Ducati 900 and has now won the Great Lakes Region Championship.

• Minnesota is the second-healthiest state, according to a study by the Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. Hawaii was the healthiest state, while Alaska and West Virginia were on the bottom of the list.

1966 – 50 years ago

• Rochester Youth Football players sold 5,500 boxes of candy in an effort to raise money to buy uniforms and equipment. $2,200 was raised.

• For the third time in little more than a year residents of Claremont School District 201 have turned down a merger proposal with Dodge Center School District 202. The vote was 211-169.

• The Spring Valley School Board has reversed an earlier decision to pay faculty members once a month and instead will return to twice monthly payments.

1941 – 75 years ago

• Several members of the Lanesboro CCC camp have left for California where they will be employed in the Lockheed airplane plant as a result of training received at the camp. Additional enrollees will be accepted at the Lanesboro camp at any time.

• The Rochester and Olmsted County selective service boards today had calls for 42 registrants to be inducted into the Army on October 15. The latest call is the second largest for registrants at one time by the board.

1916 – 100 years ago

• The village of Eyota has passed an ordinance to have what is known as a "silent policeman" placed in the center of the street where streets cross. This will help prevent serious accidents if the people heed the device. (A silent policeman was a dome or standing device installed in the middle of street intersections and the device was intended to force drivers turning in or out of the street to be on the correct side of the road rather than cut the corner).

Ten years ago:A high-speed maglev train crashed in northwestern Germany, killing 23 people in the first fatal wreck involving the high-tech system. Three Christian militants were executed in Indonesia for leading attacks on Muslims in May 2000 that left at least 70 people dead. Hewlett-Packard Co. Chairwoman Patricia Dunn resigned in the wake of the company's ill-fated investigation of boardroom media leaks. Actor Edward Albert died in Malibu, California, at age 55.

Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Germany on his first state visit to his homeland.

One year ago:Pope Francis arrived from Cuba on the first visit of his life to the United States; President Barack Obama, his wife and daughters personally welcomed the pontiff at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington. Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Seattle for a three-day visit before heading to Washington. Volkswagen AG acknowledged putting emissions-cheating software in millions of vehicles worldwide. Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, 90, died in West Caldwell, New Jersey.
