FORMER US First Lady Michelle Obama has been photographed boarding a plane owned by Richard Branson and destined for his resort in the British Virgin Islands.

The trip to billionaire Branson's Necker Island resort is the latest leg of the couple's holiday after they spent the past few days in Palm Springs, California.

After relaxing at the home of the Spanish Ambassador James Costos and his partner Michael Smith, Michelle was seen boarding the jet - though there was no sign of Obama.

It was thought to be on the way to his private paradise, Necker Island.

According to DailyMail.com, a car from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department vehicle blocked traffic in both directions on the highway so the couple could travel with relative ease to Palm Springs International airport.

They were taken to a private terminal where the entrepreneurs' plane was waiting.

According to the website, the jet had a flight plan heading to the British Virgin Island Caribbean - Necker Island is part of the archipelago.

Barack Obama wasn't seen getting on the flight but the airport's executive director, Tom Nolan, said that he had also left on Monday.

Michelle will welcome the change in weather - Palm Springs, despite being in the desert, has been under a storm warning like most of California.

It was expecting temperatures of up to 27C with the weather set to be dry and sunny for the rest of the week.

It was not known if Richard Branson was aboard the jet - which was emblazoned with a Virgin logo on the fuselage.

The billionaire posted a photo on Instagram on Saturday of himself sitting down for a meeting with Obama with the caption: "Thank you Obama."
