Robert E. Lee high school is searching for a new head football coach.

Scott Girolmo told WHSV Thursday afternoon he is stepping down from the position and will be assuming the role of head coach at Battlefield High School in Haymarket, Virginia. Girolmo will stay as a teacher at Lee through the end of the school year.

Girolmo led the Leemen for four seasons, guiding the program to the Class 2A state championship game in 2017.

"It was one of the greatest joys of my life leading the (Robert E. Lee) program," said Girolmo. "Staunton is special place."

Lee athletic director David Tibbs praised Girolmo's work in his time leading the Leemen.

"We'll miss him," said Tibbs. "We thank him for his time here."

Tibbs said the goal is to have a new coach in place by late January or early February of 2019.
