SUBLETTE, Ill. -A search and rescue team has been deployed to help search for people who may be trapped at Woodhaven Lakes campground in Sublette, Illinois.

A reported tornado touched down at a private campground in Sublette, Illinois – about 90 miles west of Chicago.

At least five people were injured at the Woodhaven Resort, though only one had to be taken to the hospital.

Trees and power lines were knocked down.

Camper trailers were tossed around and campers found themselves trapped inside until rescuers could get there.

The Red Cross has opened a shelter for storm victims at the Ellice Dinges center in Sublette.

Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Schultz says the damage from storms is “way worse than [they] anticipated” at night. Now that the sun has come up, the devastation in the campground area is better illuminated. Trailers are flipped upside down and lodged in trees.

It is believed a tornado touched down at 8 p.m., and the first 911 call came in at 8:18 p.m.

As rescue crews continue their search this morning, it is believed that the current no fatalities status of this storm may change.

Schultz described the scene as “total devastation” and said that in his 28 years, he has never seen damage this bad.
