Somalia Regional Court Slaps Further Restrictions on ‘UAE Money’

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The Banadir regional court today issued further restrictions on $9.6 million seized by security forces at Mogadishu International Airport in 2018 for allegedly violating monetary regulations.

Banadir regional court instructed the Finance Minister and the Governor of the Central Bank not to release the funds to United Arab Emirates government. The court’s decision follows a visit to the UAE by the Prime Minister of Somalia Mohamed Hussein Roble who is visiting the Gulf country.

In January, Roble commended UAE government for for humanitarian aid and apologized to the Emirati government for the seizure of money. He promised the money would be returned to UAE government.

“The Finance Minister and Governor of the Central Bank are notified of the ongoing investigations into the money seized at Mogadishu International Airport. The money should not be handed over to anyone while investigations are still ongoing” reads the court injunction in line with a Presidential Directive that rendered the Prime Minister’s pledge to UAE government legally ineffective.
