Friends and supporters of Long Beach legend Phil Trani came together on July 24 to raise nearly $100,000 in his third annual Charity Golf Tournament to benefit the youth of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.

Skylinks Golf Course hosted a full field of golfers with various games and contests at different holes. The winning foursome of the “Par or Better” tournament was the Toll Group team who posted 18 under par!

Prior to teeing off, participants enjoyed delicious breakfast burritos from Hole Mole and got to talk to some of the Club kids during a putting contest hosted by D.A. Davidson, in which the winner Matt Lasnier won his own Musty Putter.

On course, golfers were treated to massages by Leora Breese-Mares and had opportunities to win a Jeep Grand Cherokee courtesy of Glenn Thomas Dodge or $10,000 courtesy of Diane Carmain.

Patterson Construction kept everyone hydrated as the underwriter of beverages on the hot course and lunch was hosted by Rich Manor of Pacific Air Center.

The tournament concluded with a reception, delicious dining, and an auction at Phil Trani’s Restaurant.

An assortment of raffle and auction items included a ride in a bi-plane overlooking the shoreline and a home security system donated by Platt Security.

Becky Hinkle of Property Management Inc. was recognized for securing $10,000 of support in her first year on the committee.

Trani, a former member of the Boys & Girls Clubs recalls waiting outside of the club until the doors were unlocked so he could play sports in the gym and the fields. His family could not afford tennis shoes at that time, so he played in his socks.

During the reception, Don Rodriguez, chief executive officer of the Clubs, thanked Phil for being the first person in the 78-year history of the Boys & Girls Clubs to create a permanent endowment which will help the Clubs for all future generations to enjoy sports.

The tournament has netted $165,000 in the past three years and half of the proceeds are invested at the Long Beach Community Foundation in the Phil Trani Sports Fund permanent endowment for the Clubs.

Marcelle Epley from the Foundation was sponsored to play in the tournament and expressed her appreciation for establishing the fund. The other half of the funds will support the sports programs for the nearly 4,000 youth members of the Clubs this year.

Major sponsors were Phil Trani, Traffic Management Inc., Farmers Insurance and the Hebson Agency, Platt Security, Ancon Marine, Shangri-La Construction, Glenn E. Thomas, Patterson Construction, Pacific Air Center and D.A. Davidson.

The Phil Trani committee members included Marc Platt, Mark Hebson, Graham Hebson, Becky Hinkle, Justin Schaller, Dave Lasnier, Seamus McDonald, Phil Trani, Chris Spano, David Walker and Sandra Valle.
