Marilyn Goemaat Hopwood, 67, of Oskaloosa passed away April 30, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Marilyn Arlene Goemaat Hopwood was born June 3, 1948, in Oskaloosa to Abraham and Muriel (Kamerick) Goemaat.

Marilyn attended a rural school near her family’s Harvey, Iowa farmstead as a youngster and was a 1966 graduate of Pella High School.

Marilyn worked briefly as a police dispatcher in Pella following her education. She married James Edward Hopwood, December 20, 1991, in Ottumwa. They resided in Ottumwa briefly before moving to Kirkville.

After raising her children, Marilyn went back to school at Indian Hill Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. She graduated with the college’s first class of physical therapy assistants in 1995. She was then employed by Care Initiatives and traveled to nursing homes in Ottumwa, Albia and Chariton, providing therapy to residents.

Marilyn resided at Homestead in Oskaloosa since March of 2014. While living there, she enjoyed playing BINGO and doing word searches. Marilyn loved going shopping and out for lunch with friends. She delighted in visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her family includes her children: Jody (& Chris) Van Patten of Oskaloosa, and Jason (& Carrie) Blommers of Pella; a daughter-in-law, Heather Blommers of Eddyville; two step-children: Tammy Hopwood of Ottumwa and James (& Cecelia) Hopwood of Ottumwa; twelve grandchildren: Brian, Stephanie, Nate and Abby Gott, Kelcey, Lindsey and Ashley Blommers, Zachary McElroy, Alison Blommers, Megan Prado, and Spenser and Brok Hopwood; five great-grandchildren: Sophie and Aubree Bunnell, Madelynn and Christian McElroy, and Taleigha Hopwood; her mother, Muriel Goemaat of Knoxville; and her siblings: Ron (& Barb) Goemaat of Leighton, Judith (& Larry) De Graaf of New Sharon, and Linda (& Harry) Ver Hoef of Pella.

In addition to her father, Marilyn was preceded in death by a son, Joseph; and her husband, James on August 26, 2001.

Funeral Services for Marilyn will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Dan Visser of Faith Community Church of Eddyville officiating.
Private family burial will precede the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.
Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday at the funeral chapel, with the family present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Memorials may be made to On with Life in Ankeny, Iowa.
