Two men arrested on financial crimes charges in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A former Wilmington accountant and a South Carolina man are charged with financial crimes following two separate investigations in Brunswick County.

Bruce Alan Rains, 66, of Wilmington, was arrested Tuesday on seven counts of obtaining property under false pretense and seven counts of forgery of an instrument.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Rains defrauded Hoffman Ecoworks, Inc. by altering the name from “Internal Revenue Service” to “Bruce Rains Accountant” on multiple checks totaling nearly $7,000.

The alleged crimes happened between January of 2016 and June 11, 2018.

Rains was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Facility and placed under a $10,000 secured bond.

In a separate investigation, detectives arrested Henry Frederick Specht, Jr., 60, of Little River, SC, for felony obtaining property under false pretense.

Specht is charged with accepting checks from an individual with the promise of preparing, filing and paying taxes to the North Carolina Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service and failing to do so.

The checks totaled over $83,000.

Specht was arrested Tuesday.  He is also in the Brunswick County Detention Facility under a $10,000 secured bond.
