‘Elena of Avalor’ Sneak Peek: Lou Diamond Phillips is a Gem of a Villain

With TV dramas like Longmire, Blindspot, 24, and Numb3rs on his résumé, a Disney Channel animated series about a Latina princess might be the last place you’d expect to find Lou Diamond Phillips. But the Golden Globe-nominated actor will make his debut as the villainous Victor Delgado in Saturday’s “King of the Carnaval” episode of Elena of Avalor, and he couldn’t be happier about it.

Phillips voices the role of Esteban’s (Christian Lanz) childhood friend who was once forced to flee Avalor. When he returns to the magical kingdom just in time for the Carnaval celebration, he brings his charm — and a revenge plan to rob the royal treasury.

In this exclusive preview, Phillips talks about his role as the debonair villain, teasing that the character may not be as he seems. “A lot of people would say he’s one of the bad guys… I’d say he’s simply misunderstood.” (Hmmm, there’s no misunderstanding that evil cackle, though!)

Take a look at the video to also see why Phillips says that, as a father, he is grateful and happy to contribute to this empowering Disney series.

The Elena of Avalor episode “King of the Carnaval” airs Saturday, April 22 at 9 a.m. on Disney Channel.
