New Rose Petals Cafe Opening In Elkins Park

Rose Petal specials include catfish and grits, stuffed french toast, and a spinach waffle with chicken sausage and feta cheese.

ELKINS PARK, PA — Owners of the Germantown-based Rose Petals Cafe are expanding their operation into Montgomery County.

The popular restaurant will open up in Yorktown Plaza in Elkins Park on Sept. 21.

"Our plan has always been to open a handful of Rose Petal Café locations, and we were deliberate about waiting to open our second location after our five year anniversary," said co-owner Desmin Daniels, who runs things along with his wife, Jania. "We see Elkins Park as an ideal neighborhood for us to thrive in, as it’s a close-knit community which doesn’t contain a community-focused independent breakfast and lunch destination like ours."

The opening night will be a "pay what you want" fundraiser for Cheltenham School District's arts programs.

Desmin, 37, a former Philadelphia School District teacher, and Jania, 36, a former special education teacher, met while in school together at Syracuse University. They married in 2006, and have several children.

But it was a family tragedy — the murder of Desmin's younger sister, Rose, just 27 in 2011 — which inspired them to finally open a restaurant.

“Rose’s death was what catapulted our urgency for building our legacy and being a family orientated business," Desmin added.

The cafe is best known for their waffles, but they offer a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, vegetarian options. Specials include biscuits and gravy, Grandma's Stuffed French Toast, Southern Comfort Waffle, Catfish and Grits, and more. Many of the items are family recipes from Desmin's grandmother, Linda Henderson.
