Volunteer firefighter fatally struck by 2nd firefighter at crash site
A volunteer firefighter was killed at the scene of a crash Friday night when he was run over by another responding firefighter.Deputies from the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department and three firefighters from the Montgomery and Cannelburg Fire Departments responded to a crash with injury at 9:55 p.m. Friday along Old Highway 50 west of County Road 800 East.The firefighters arrived in their personal vehicles.A fourth responding firefighter -- Colby Blake, 26, of Cannelburg -- struck a parked pickup truck and another car when he arrived.Kendall Murphy, 27, of Montgomery, one of the firefighters who responded to the scene, was standing outside the car and was struck by Blake's truck.Blake struck a third vehicle before coming to a stop.Murphy suffered several injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Daviess County coroner. Blake was uninjured.Upon further investigation, Blake was found to be operating while intoxicated with a blood alcohol level of 0.21.Blake faces preliminary charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death and reckless driving.He is currently being held in the Daviess County Security Center.The investigation is ongoing.
