The family of late actor Anton Yelchin has reached a settlement with Fiat Chrysler, the manufacturer of the Jeep involved in the film star’s sudden death.
Yelchin’s parents sued the car conglomerate in 2016, weeks after their son was crushed by his vehicle in a freak accident in his driveway.
A representative for the actor said, “The settlement will go to the Anton Yelchin Foundation and to the filming of a documentary on Anton’s life. The mission of the Foundation is to empower and support young people engaged in creative arts who face career challenges due to debilitating disease or disability.”
The terms of the agreement have not been made public.
Fiat Chrysler also confirmed a settlement had been reached.
“FCA US is pleased that we’ve reached an amicable resolution in this matter,” a representative for Fiat Chrysler said in a statement to the Daily News. “The details of the settlement are confidential. We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to the Yelchin family for their tragic loss.”
The 27-year-old was killed when his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backward down his California driveway after he’d gotten out of it, pinning him between a gate and a pillar.
At a press conference announcing the lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler, the Yelchin family’s attorney Gary Dordick said the actor had gotten out his car “believing the vehicle was in park.”
The type of Jeep that killed Yelchin had been under a recall notice for a transmission error.
Yelchin was best known for his portrayal of Chekov in the rebooted “Star Trek” films. One of his final movies, “Thoroughbreds,” premiered earlier this month.
