DALZELL, SC (WIS) - Police said they arrested and charged a man with murder stemming from an incident that occurred on Cannery Road in Dalzell on Thursday.

Lorenzo Smallwood was a former marine who living in Dalzell with his wife and two children, ages 2 and 5.

But friday, his close-knit family gathered to pay respects after something that no one can understand happened.

"I don't know what went down -- what happened," Delores Vaughn, an aunt, said.

Relatives say Smallwood and his brother-in-law George Lindsay were up the street at their wives' grandmother's house Thursday.

The men's wives are sisters.

"They got along like brothers," Delores said.

But some kind of fight broke out between them in the backyard.

Investigators say George Lindsay shot his brother-in-law in the backyard with a .32-caliber handgun.

Smallwood, riddled with gunshots throughout his body, died.

Officers say Lindsay took off, only to turn himself in to deputies a short time later.

Deputies say so far they have not found a motive. The family doesn't know either.

"Every time we would have family gatherings, everyone would get along -- never had any bad blood between them," Delores said.

Now, the family is ripped apart. Both men's wives, the sisters, were too upset to talk.

"It's going to take a lot of prayers... But family will help her through it," Delores said.

Several hours, Lindsay turned himself in to Sumter County deputies.

Lindsay was transported to the Sumter Lee Regional Detention Center and was awaiting a bond hearing.
