'We can accomplish big goals': Demi Lovato speaks to the U.N... with her Smurfs cartoon co-stars in attendance

Being invited to speak to the United Nations is no small feat.

And Demi Lovato had two very special guests when she swung by the U.N. headquarters in New York on Friday - her co-stars from Smurfs: The Lost Village.

Mandy Patinkin and Joe Manganiello joined her at the event celebrating the International Day Of Happiness and plugging the #SmallSmurfsBigGoals campaign.

'Every one of us, even a Small Smurf, can accomplish big goals,' said the 24-year-old singer and actress.

She'd spent a bit of time posing on a blue carpet outside the actual ceremony before taking the podium in the vast General Assembly Chamber.

Demi, who recently celebrated five years' sobriety, had slid on a simple sleeveless white dress cut off above the knee, teamed with matching ankle-strap stilettos.

Her hair was cropped above the shoulders, and she stood for carpet photographs beside someone dressed as Smurfette, the character she voices in the film.

Manganiello had turned up in a navy suit elegantly fitted to his muscled build, popping on a complementary tie and black dress shoes.

Meanwhile, the Homeland actor had opted for a black suit he'd teamed with a black dress shirt, leaving his top button undone and doing without a tie.

Patinkin plays Papa Smurf in the film, while the husband of Sofia Vergara plays a Smurf called Hefty, and people dressed as both characters trod the carpet as well.

Patinkin, like Lovato, spoke onstage at the establishment's headquarters, where the UN News Centre reports 1,500 international Model UN students had gathered.

The bash, in part, lavished praise and 'keys' to Smurf Village on three students who'd contributed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals the UN has set.

'On behalf of all Smurfdom,' Patinkin thanked the honorees 'for your work in awakening everything, in your community, through you social media, all over the world, in the ways that you have chosen to encourage people everywhere to make this world a better place for those who are so vulnerable in every way imaginable.'

He counseled: 'Never be afraid to speak up and to make this world a wonderful, beautiful, hopeful, optimistic place full of freedom, joy, justice and dignity, good food, good water, good opportunities for people everywhere, forever.'

These development objectives, which the UN has abbreviated as SDGs, were featured on signs which the celebrity guests had been given to pose with at the fête.
