Each time Harrison drove to the basket, the Raiders either had to alter their shot or have it deflected.

When McCutcheon’s perimeter players received a pass, the Mavericks were welcomed with plenty of space between themselves and the nearest defender.

This is the Trevor Lockwood effect, and it’s a major reason why the Mavericks improved to 5-0 Friday night by steamrolling rival Harrison, 82-51.

Lockwood sat the final quarter of the blowout victory, but he had already collected his first career triple-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 12 blocks.

“I think we showed what we can play to, and I think we can still play better than that,” Lockwood said. “We have endless possibilities with this team.”

Harrison chose to sag in and keep the McCutcheon senior big man from dominating offensively. His presence was enough for the Mavericks, who took advantage of open looks from the outside to make 14 of 35 3-pointers and dominated from the opening tip after Nate Deno sank three early 3s and Mark Neill made another during a 17-4 start to the game.

“The first quarter really went well for us and the good start kind of got them in a slump,” said Deno, who scored 19 points.

The Raiders couldn’t claw back with Lockwood stuffing attempts inside and the defense suffocating Harrison sharpshooting guard Cade Renicker, who was limited to 2-of-9 shooting from the field and 12 points.

“Renicker had a good start to the season and had really developed a really good 3-point shot, and even with a little stepback shot two or three feet behind the line,” McCutcheon coach Rick Peckinpaugh said. “We emphasized to our kids we had to get out to him and we had to help on (Taylon) Sondgerath in the post.”

Because of inclement weather, McCutcheon didn’t play last week after starting 4-0 and winning the J&C Hoops Classic. The Mavericks used that time to work on 3-point shooting and ball movement, both of which were spectacular on Friday night.

On Friday night, five different players made a 3 in the first half, with Tre’Shon Heard making 4 of 5 while scoring 18 of his game-high 20 points in the opening two quarters.

“It starts with Trevor, of course, but on any given night, anybody can drop 20,” Deno said. “Having that confidence in all of our team is great.”

Harrison made just 16 of 48 from the field, a credit to Lockwood’s presence in the paint. Renicker and Sondgerath came in as the area’s No. 4 and 12 scorers, respectively, combining for 33 points a game. Countering that was eight players finding the scoring column for McCutcheon, with three scoring in double figures and Darnell Butler nearly joining them with nine points.

“They’ve got weapons,” said Sondgerath, who was limited to just six points on five field goal attempts. “They can shoot the ball and they can go inside and be aggressive. That was our game plan … to shut down the inside and allow some shots outside, but not like that.”
