Lower Alabama search for Shari Saunders suspended

The search for a woman whose car was found abandoned in woods in Conecuh County has been abandoned after three days of searching.

Shari Saunders, 67, had been travelling from Norfolk, Virginia, to Monroeville to visit family around 10 days ago but did not arrive. Her car was discovered by hunters Sunday near to a camp deep in the woods where Conecuh County meets Escambia County.

Rescue teams had been searching since Monday and called on volunteers to help Wednesday. But before volunteers could even start searching authorities sent them home. It's currently unclear why the search was called off.

Saunders was last seen on surveillance video at a gas station in Evergreen Aug. 5.
