The adult daughter of one of The Piano Guys went missing after embarking on a hike through Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge.
Anna (Annie) Schmidt — the 21-year-old daughter of Jon Schmidt, pianist for the Utah-based musical group — was last seen Sunday before she announced on Snapchat that she was going on a hike.
Her mother, who flew from Utah to Portland on Wednesday for a long-planned camping trip with her daughter, reported her missing when Anna Schmidt failed to pick her up from the airport.
“I just got a rental car and went to her apartment, and when I showed up her roommate was really alarmed because she said, ‘I thought you guys were gone. I thought you were already camping, she’s been gone since Sunday,’ ” Michelle Schmidt told Fox 13 Salt Lake City.
Search crews began canvassing the Tooth Rock trailhead in the gorge, about 20 miles east of Portland, on the path where Schmidt said she was hiking in her final Snapchat message Sunday.
Rescue teams found her car parked near the river. It had been broken into and ransacked, officials said.
Schmidt, who moved to Portland from Salt Lake City in July, is an avid hiker and recently bought a new tent and backpack, her family said. Police said there are no signs of foul play, and her parents worry that she may have been injured or gotten lost while hiking a new area.
“She is so adventurous. She definitely is the type of person who would pull over, see something beautiful and just go,” Jon Schmidt told KPTV.
Jon Schmidt joined his wife in Oregon and both were at the search command post Friday. The Utah father plays piano for the musical group The Piano Guys, which is known for its piano and cello versions of popular songs.
The band posted a plea on Facebook Friday urging any other hikers who may have seen the missing Schmidt on Sunday to contact police.
“We need everyone’s prayers too. Thank you,” the group added.
Anna Schmidt is 5-foot-4, 125 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone who may have seen her is asked to call 911.
