BEREA, Ohio -- Swimming, fishing, picnicking, hiking and golfing are high on the list of most-favored summer activities.

If golf's your thing, you're in luck.

Get in the swing by signing up for the annual Berea High School Alumni Association golf outing July 20 at Coppertop at Cherokee Hills Golf Course in Valley City.

The outing raises funds for the association's scholarship program. Each year, the association awards a $2,000 Berea Braves Scholarship to a graduating Berea-Midpark High School senior.

The golf outing coincides with the Berea Alumni Association's annual all-class reunion, which begins at 6 p.m. July 20 at Pulaski and Berea streets in the city's historic Polish Village neighborhood.

Registration for the day of golf and a photo op for foursomes will begin at 8 a.m. July 20, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

There will be lunch at the turn, and the day will culminate with a buffet dinner followed by the awards ceremony.

The fee is $85 per person for the four-person scramble tournament and includes green fees, 1/2 cart, lunch and dinner, door prizes and raffles, skill events including a putting contest, and plaques for the winners.

Participants can also sign up or dinner, fellowship and raffles for $25.

Hole sponsorships are $100 per hole and are tax deductible.

A 'New' Coe Lake: Coe Lake has been a focal point for family fun and outdoor activities for residents of Berea and surrounding communities for a number of years.

Now the newly renovated and expanded venue is ready to offer more entertainment options to a wider audience.

The most recent improvements to the park, begun in 2014, include a new picnic pavilion, improved gazebo, outdoor amphitheater seating constructed of Berea sandstone, a moveable stage, a new sound system, enhanced hiking trails, a fishing pier and a new entryway.

A summer concert series, Live at the Lake, which is new this year, kicked off July 6 with the McCartney Project, a Wings, Beatles and Paul McCartney tribute band.

Other concerts will include Motown Sounds of Touch on July 13; Drew Baldridge, July 20; Sounds of Summer, a Beach Boys tribute band, July 27; Departure, a Journey tribute, Aug. 3; and Jon Langston, Aug. 10.

Concerts are free and open to the public and run from 7 to 10 p.m. on Fridays.

A beer tent and food trucks will be on the premises at each concert.

Summer Flicks: Family-friendly outdoor movies at Coe Lake will be screened July 14, July 21 and Aug. 4.

Expanded playground: The popular John Mucklo Playground and the Berea Municipal Pool are part of the city's Coe Lake recreation and entertainment complex.

The pool has been improved, and the existing pirate-themed playground expansion is nearing completion and will include a kid-sized zipline.

Coe Lake, the picnic pavilion, amphitheater, gazebo, hiking paths, fishing pier, playground and other amenities are located behind City Hall, off South Rocky River Drive and adjacent to the Cleveland Metroparks.

Named to Dean's List: Haley Yahraus and Hannah Yahraus of Middleburg Heights were among LeHigh University students named to the Dean's List for the spring 2018 semester.

Dean's List status is granted to LU students who earn a scholastic grade point average of 3.6 or better, while carrying at least 12 hours of regularly graded courses.

Lunch program: A summer lunch program for children in need will be hosted by the Berea Ministerial Association from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday through Aug. 17 at People's Community Church, 631 N. Rocky River Drive, and at St. Mary's School, 265 Baker St.

Children can be of any age through high school and must be residents of Berea. There is no need to register.

Middleburg Heights pantry: The Middleburg Heights Food Pantry at 7000 Paula Drive is open to serve clients from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdays.

Berea pantry hours: The Berea Community Outreach Food Pantry, 535 Wyleswood Drive (at front of Smith School), is open from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays. For more information, call 440-826-4891.

SCAN has regular hours: The SCAN Hunger Pantry, 398 W. Bagley Road, Suite 7, in Berea, has regular hours of operation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second Friday of the month and from 4 to 7 p.m. on the fourth Friday of the month.
