Rihanna is busy crossing multiple platforms of entertainment. Aside from an upcoming studio album that is about to drop anytime soon, the pop diva will return to the big screen to star in Luc Besson’s upcoming sci-fi epic.

Bresson, known for directing “The Fifth Element” and “Lucy,” announced on Wednesday that Rihanna will star in “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” alongside Clive Owen (“Closer”), Cara Delevingne (“Paper Towns”) and Dane DeHaan (“The Amazing Spider-Man 2”).

The announcement was made in Bresson's official instagram account. The post did not disclose the character that Rihanna will play but the director said that the singer will have a big part in the film.

In 2012, Rihanna crossed the movie industry when she starred opposite Taylor Kitsch in “Battleship.” She also had a cameo in “This is the End” and appeared in the remake of “Annie.” Recently, she voiced the role of Gratuity in the sci-fi animated film “Home.”

According to Deadline, “Valerian” has a monstrous budget of $180 million. Bresson announced the project in his Facebook page and said that he considers it as the biggest challenge of his carreer.

The film will be an adaptation of the award-winning 1967 French graphic novel “Valérian and Laureline” by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres.

Set in the 28th century, the comic book follows a spatio-temporal agent Valérian and his colleague Laureline as they travel through space and time. Together, the duo is tasked to protect the world from neighboring threats in space and from the bad guys of the 28th century.

DeHaan will play the role of Valérian and Delevingne will play the role of Laureline.

The movie will be shot in France and the production will begin shooting on January, 2016. “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” is scheduled for theatrical release on July 21, 2017.
