Entries are now being accepted for the Wexford Lions Club open submission exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre.

Submissions are invited from local artists and anyone who has an interest in art regardlness of their level of skill or previous experience.

The Lions Club exhibition is an annual event celebrating local talent and offering a public platform to artists who are at various states of their careers as well as those who wish to see their work in a gallery for the first time.

The exhibition will run in the lower and upper galleries of the Arts Centre from Saturday, March 3, to Saturday, March 31, with an official launch taking place on Saturday, March 10, at 3 p.m. when prize-winners will be announced.

Due to the great success of last year's show which attracted a high standard of paintings and sculptures, the theme for the 2018 Lions Club exhibiton has again been left open to the imaginations of entrants.

'The open brief allows participants the freedom to create exciting and original artwork and to tell their own stories', said Catherine Bowe, visual arts manager at Wexford Arts Centre. 'These stories or experiences can be related through a varied range of subjects such as urban and rural narratives, abstraction and even pure imagination'.

The event will also feature a Young Lions gallery, dedicated exclusively to the work of young budding artists. Young artists are encouraged to experiment with all types of mediums and objects including paints, glitter, buttons, transfers, Lego etc.

As Lions Club International celebrated its centenary in 2017, a perpetual Children's Trophy will be awarded for a work that explores the history and/or reflects the aims and overall ethos of the organisation.

Wexford Lions Club has served the community of Wexford since 1979, providing support including financial assistance and food vouchers for families in need at Christmas and contributing to many community projects.

The club's Trabolgan Holiday Project gives families who cannot afford a holiday a chance to enjoy a break in County Cork. Last summer, the club brought 37 people from the Wexford area to Trabolgan. Another Lions Club project is The Message in a Bottle initiative which encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details in a common place where emergency teams can find them in case of a crisis.

The Carers Weekend Project treats carers to a weekend in the Ballvaloo Centre in Blackwater, offering them counselling and motivational talks along with much-needed respite and an opportunity to meet other carers and share their experiences.

Art exhibition entrants are asked to complete an application form and collect a watercolour paper or canvas from Wexford Arts Centre.

Applications are limited to one per person and as the number of artists participating in the exhibition is limited, applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis.  Application forms and canvasses/boards are available now and the deadline for submission of completed work to Wexford Arts Centre is 4 p.m. on Friday, February 23. The entry fee is €10. All artworks must be submitted unframed on the paper/canvas provided. Sculptural works will not be presented in the exhibition this year due to limited space.

Wexford Arts Centre and Wexford Lions Club would like to thank Spectrum Art Supply Shop for their generous support of the exhibition. For more information contact Catherine Bowe on 053 9123764 or email catherine@wexfordartscentre.ie.
