'Spider-Man' Musical Recruits More Help, More Delays Possible?

Following the news that the official opening of “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” would be delayed a fifth time—now scheduled to open March 15—critics lashed out at the musical, taking it to task on aspects many have seen as problematic — among them, its plot.

Since then, there’s been an apparent bit of scrambling within the musical’s camp. The latest intelligence, courtesy of The New York Times, looks to be the addition of veteran musical supervisor and conductor, Paul Bogaev.

Bogaev will act as “a consultant to help improve the performance, vocal and orchestration arrangements, and sound quality of the songs and numbers,” according to the production’s spokesman, Rick Miramontez.

This comes five days after the news that comic scribe Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa may already have joined the “Turn Off The Dark” team in editing the musical’s storyline.

With this latest addition comes the reasonable speculation that “Turn Off The Dark” will be delayed a sixth time to undergo presumably substantial revamping. As of yesterday, Mr. Miramontez had no comment on the possibility of another delay.

Just yesterday, The New York Post reported that producers of the musical may have tapped director Phil McKinley to aid Julie Taymor in refining the production as co-director. Miramontez later shot down the rumor, telling New York Magazine blog Vulture that the production "has not brought anyone on and the original creative team remains firmly in place, with Julie Taymor at the helm."

Despite its cumbersome output and bemused press, the show has yet to suffer financially, but with the highest weekly running costs on Broadway, profit margins are slimmer than Spidey’s spandex jams.
