Sonny Scroggins will have a vigil at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Martin Luther King Memorial Tree on the south side of the Statehouse.

Community activist Sonny Scroggins plans to hold a Thanksgiving Day vigil at the Statehouse as he reflects on worldwide violence.

He is dedicating the ceremony, which will be at 10 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Memorial Tree on the south side of the Statehouse, to people serving in U.S. embassies overseas.

“Everybody wants to leave the planet a little bit better than we found it,” Scroggins said. “We’re talking about saving man from himself.”

The State Department on Monday warned U.S. citizens to be alert during holiday travel abroad. The warning came less than two weeks after the terrorist attacks in Paris and an attack that killed 19 people at a hotel in Mali.

Scroggins’ vigil will include wrapping the MLK tree in a France-colored ribbon. The public is invited to attend.

This week also saw an attack on Black Lives Matter demonstrators in Minneapolis and the release of a video showing a police officer shooting a teenager 16 times.

Voicing his support for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Scroggins said men have failed in their long stranglehold on power.

“Man ain’t gonna change,” Scroggins said. “Women probably ain’t gonna change, either, but I’m saying, hey, give her a chance.”
