KAI: A LARGE NUMBER OF OFFICERS WERE CLOSE BY IN THE AREA AROUND INTERSTATE 70 AND 695 AS PART OF A JOINT INITIATIVE FOCUSED ON STREET RACING AND AGGRESSIVE DRIVERS. THE INITIATIVE STARTED FRIDAY NIGHT AT 8:00 AND WENT THROUGH 4:00 ON SATURDAY MORNING. IN THIS CASE POLICE SAY THERE WERE TWO RACES AND OFFICERS ARE ABLE TO GET IN FRONT OF RUN OF THEM AND CATCH DRIVERS AS THEY TOOK OFF. >> IT IS AN ONGOING BATTLE. THEY’RE ALWAYS TRYING TO DO THINGS TO KEEP THE PUBLIC SAFE. KA THEY SAY, OVERALL, THEY STOP 65 DRIVERS, GAVE OUT 97 TICKETS, ARRESTED THREE PEOPLE FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND CHARGED TWO RACERS FOR DRIVING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE. IT IS THE SAME AREA WHERE POLICE HAVE USED TACTICS TO TRY TO STOP THE RACING. IN 2000 9, 2 BY STANDARDS ARE KILLED AND TWO OTHERS INJURED. >> THAT IS WHY WE ARE OUT THERE ON PATROL TRYING TO GET THE MESSAGE OUT THERE THAT IT IS DANGEROUS. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. Police combat illegal street racing on I-70
Officials with the Maryland State Police and the Baltimore County Police Department said they teamed up in an effort to enforce aggressive driving and illegal street racing in Baltimore County.Officials said they enacted traffic enforcement efforts started at 8 p.m. on Friday and ended at 4 a.m. on Saturday, yielding to 65 traffic stops, which led to troopers and officers issuing 97 citations, 33 warnings and 23 safety equipment repair orders. Three people were arrested for impaired driving, two were cited for driving on suspended licenses and two street racers were issued multiple citations, police said.The initiative took place on I-70 and I-695. Through the investigation, troopers said they learned of two illegal street races, which had a crowd of 50 to 60 people, officials said. The believe many of the street racers are regulars who come from several counties to race.Officials said the drivers were especially bold."They're shutting down intersections, for some reason, to shut down Interstate 70 for 15 to 20 minutes, that's a big thing," Maryland State Police Sgt. DaVaughn Parker said.Police said there were two street races held during their enforcement. Officials said they were able to positioned themselves along one of the street racing routes. "It's an ongoing battle. Maryland State Police and the Baltimore County Police Department are always trying to do things to keep the public safe and try to stay one foot ahead," Parker said.Officials said when drivers found out, the drivers began to try to flee. Police said they were able to stop and charge two drivers.Officials said this is not a new process. They said the tactics have been used in the area in the past to stop racing. In 2009, two bystanders wre killed and two others were injured in a race that led to a crash. "That's why we're out doing patrol, and to try to get the message out there, that, 'Hey, illegal street racing is dangerous, it's very dangerous, and there are other things that you can do with your time,'" Parker said.The departments said they will continue to put a stop to illegal street racing and will hold initiatives in the future.
