Leesburg police are investigating a shooting on Main Street that left one man dead Monday morning.

Police were called to the shooting near 1700 W. Main St. about 9:40 a.m. Monday, arriving to find the shooter still at the scene and the victim wounded by at least one bullet, Capt. Joe Iozzi said.

The shooter, identified by police as 29-year-old Darrell Kendell White, was detained while officers treated the wounded man, 28-year-old Kevin Lathrio Williams. Williams was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center and later died, according to police.

White was taken to the Police Department to be interviewed.

Later in the day, he was released from custody without charges after “lengthy consultation between detectives and the State Attorney’s Office,” Iozzi said in an emailed statement.

“However, the investigation remains open and ongoing, pending additional investigative findings,” he said. “We would like to ensure our community, and all persons involved, that a thorough and complete investigation will render the appropriate outcome in this case.

Iozzi said preliminary information suggested the incident began with an argument between the two men, and possibly other people, that escalated to violence.

Police have not said what prompted the argument.

The shooting caused lockdowns at Leesburg High School and nearby day care centers, but those were lifted when police determined the only suspect was the gunman in custody.
