The announcement by the NDP government of introducing publicly funded subsidies to political parties is absolutely outrageous.

During the spring election campaign, all focus on this issue was around the laudable objective of eliminating corporate and union donations (the so-called “big money”) and restricting individual donations to $1,200 per person. I do not recall any reference to introducing public subsidies over which taxpayers would have absolutely no control. I had naïvely assumed that the focus of political parties under the proposed system would be to broaden their voter support base by engaging more closely with voters to gain their financial support.

How wrong I was! This is nothing more than the sleight-of-hand that we have sadly come to expect of politicians. Shame on them all.
