BEN WAGNER IS THERE LIVE, NEAR SECOND AND PLANKINTON. BEN, RESIDENTS ARE NOT HAPPY. BEN: THEY ARE NOT. WE SPOKE WITH A NUMBER OF THEM, AND ESPECIALLY THE NEIGHBORS ON THE NINTH FLOOR, WHO HAVE BEEN TAKING THE STAIRS THE ENTIRE TIME. THEY SAY THEY’RE OK. BUT THEY SAID THEY ARE WORRIED ABOUT OLDER TENANTS IN THE BUILDING WHO ARE STRUGGLING TO MAKE IT HOME. THIS NINE STORY HIKE HAS BECOME A DAILY ROUTINE FOR MEGAN BROCKMAN. >> NINTH FLOOR. >> OH NO. BEN: WHAT IS THIS LIKE EVERYDAY? >> AWFUL. BEN: SHE MOVED INTO A TOP NINTH FLOOR APARTMENT AT CHALET AT THE RIVER IN THERE ARE TWO ELEVATORS AUGUST. IN THE BUILDING FOR RESIDENTS. >> THE ELEVATOR SITUATION. BEN: SHE SAYS ONE HAS WORKED SPORADICALLY. >> I'M ACTUALLY SCARED. BEN: THE OTHER SHE SAYS HASN’T WORKED AT ALL SINCE SHE MOVED IN. >> ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE GROCERY SHOPPING, YOU WANT TO BE MINDFUL OF NOT GETTING TOO MUCH AT ONCE BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO CARRY IT UP ALL THE STAIRS. >> IT’S BEEN DIFFICULT, NOT ON ME, BUT I HAVE AN 11-YEAR-OLD DOG. IT’S BEEN HARD FOR ME TO GET UP AND DOWN THE STAIRS. THERE’S ACTUALLY ONE TIME I HAD TO CARRY HIM UP THE STAIRS BECAUSE HE WAS POOPING OUT ON ME. BEN: MANAGEMENT SAYS A REPAIR WORKER IS COMING BUT DISPUTED HOW LONG THE ELEVATORS HAVE BEEN OUT. THEY SAID THE ELEVATORS HAVE BEEN BROKEN A LONG TIME AND THERE HAVE BEEN FIXES. >> NOT LIKE THAT. WE TAKE CARE OF IT AS IT ARISES. BEN: WHILE BROCKMAN HAS BEEN USED TO THE CLIMB, SHE SAYS SHE WORRIES ABOUT HER OLDER NEIGHBORS. >> I LIKE LIVING HERE, I THINK IT’S A GREAT PLACE, THERE’S A- LOT OF GOOD PEOPLE THAT LIVEA- HERE, AND IT’S JUST A SHAME TO WATCH PEOPLE STRUGGLING FOR SOMETHING THAT REALLY, WE’RE PAYING RENT FOR. PATRICK: BEN, WHEN IS THAT REPAIR COMING? BEN: THE SIGN INSIDE SAID THEY HAD A REPAIR WORKER COMING EARLY TOMORROW. THEY WERE ALSO GIVING RESIDENTS RIDES ON THE FREIGHT ELEVATOR TONIGHT. NEIGHBORS SAY TOLD ME THEY’LL WAIT BEFORE THEY GET EXCIT

Management says repair worker will come Wednesday

Residents who live in a nine-story downtown Milwaukee apartment building are being forced to take the stairs because they said the elevator has been out for months. This nine-story hike has become a daily routine for Megan Brockman. She moved into a ninth floor apartment at Chalet at the River, at Plankinton Avenue and Second Street in August.There are two elevators in the building for residents. She said one has worked sporadically, the other, she said, hasn't worked at all since she moved in."Especially if you're grocery shopping, you want to be mindful of not getting too much at once because you have to carry it up all the stairs," Brockman said. "It's been difficult, not on me, but I have an 11-year old dog so it's been hard for me to get up and down the stairs. There's actually one time I had to carry him up the stairs because he was pooping out on me," resident Erick Smith said. Management said a repair worker is coming Wednesday, but disputed how long the elevators have been out.Residents said they'll wait before they get excited about a permanent fix.While Brockman has been used to the climb, she said she worries about her older neighbors."I like living here. I think it's a great place. There are a lot of good people that live here, and it's just a shame to watch people struggling for something that really -- we're paying rent for," Brockman said. Building management gave residents rides on the freight elevator Tuesday night.
