LHUCA confirms dates for children’s play

“Charlotte’s Web,” a one-hour children’s play adapted from E.B. White’s novel by Joseph Robinette, will be staged at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Firehouse Theatre at LHUCA, 511 Ave. K. This is part of the 2018-2019 Will of the Wind Productions season.

Direction is by Dea Young-Smith.

General admission tickets are $10, with no discounts available.

Latin songstress Chavez performs at Tech

Multi-ethnic Latin pop songstress Gina Chavez, a nine-time Austin Music Awards winner, will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at the Allen Theatre in the Tech Student Union Building on campus. Her appearance is part of the 2018-19 Tech Presidential Lecture and Performance Series.

Chavez was named Musician of the Year in 2015 by the Austin Music Awards. She took home Album of the Year for her sophomore effort “Up Rooted,” which topped the Amazon and Latin iTunes charts after she was featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” A CD signing will follow her performance.

General admission tickets are $20 (includes service charge).

Gilmore, Good co-headline house concert

Singer-songwriters Colin Gilmore and Nicolette Good will headline a HubCityMusic.com indoor house concert at 7:15 p.m. Friday at the home of Paul and Claire Johnson, 5806 77th St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for general admission seating are $20, with 100 percent of all funds received going to the performers.

LCT stages thriller ‘Wait Until Dark’

“Wait Until Dark,” a mystery/thriller written by Frederick Knott, from an adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher, will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with matinee at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at Lubbock Community Theatre, 4230 Boston Ave.

Direction is by Leah Tyson Houchin.

Reserved seats are $20 for the general public, $15 for seniors and students, and $5 for student rush tickets five minutes prior to the play beginning.

Moonlight Musicals stages ‘Wizard of Oz’

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s adaptation of stage musical “The Wizard of Oz” will be performed as a Moonlight Musicals indoor production at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Nov. 23-24, and also at 2 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 25, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theatre, 1501 Mac Davis Lane. The first weekend occurs during the Junior League’s Holiday Happening.

The 1987 stage adaptation has music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by E.Y. Harburg and a book by John Kane; it is based on the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, and the classic 1939 movie written by Noel Langly, Florence Ryerson and Edgar Allan Woolfe.

Stage direction is by Gerald Dolter. Music direction is by Justin Duncan, with choreography by Amy Cox. The cast includes Anna Tesh as Dorothy Gale, Robin Grimes as Glinda the Good Witch of the North and Aunt Em, Mariel Morgan as the Wicked Witch of the West and Miss Gulch, Chase Gibson as the Scarecrow, Keegan Peck as the Tin Man, Frank Rendon as the Cowardly Lion, and Mike Morgan as the Wizard of Oz.

A Tyler Elliott memorial concert, called “Cowboys and Angels,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave.

Ragtown opens Polk’s ‘Bethlehem, Christmas Musical’

The popular original play “Bethlehem, The Christmas Musical,” written by Chip Polk and directed by Glenn Polk, will be staged at 3 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 17, Dec. 1, Dec. 8 and Dec. 15, and also at 3 p.m. on Dec. 9 and Dec. 16, at the Ragtown Gospel Theater, 870 Ragtown Road near Post (two miles west of Post, off U.S. 84). There is no show on Nov. 24. First performed in 2010, this year’s production is its fourth at the Ragtown Gospel Theater.

Cast members are Glenn Polk as God the Father, Christopher Smith as Jesus, Travis Burge as Satan, Jeron Robinson as Joseph, and Catie Silva as Mary. The 36-member cast also includes Ragtown veterans Jay Young, Michael Williams, Nathan Graves and Joe Bass.

Chip Polk and guest artists open each show with a Christmas concert. Seating is handicapped accessible.

Sounds of West Texas at Cactus

Sounds of West Texas will perform a concert called “Home for the Holidays” at 7 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave. The concert includes holiday,inspirational and gospel music, focusing on songs about home, family and love. Door prizes will be given away at 6:50 p.m. and more at the end of intermission.

3rd Wheel salutes Tom Petty music

Lubbock rock band 3rd Wheel will headline a tribute concert of Tom Petty music at 8 p.m. Nov. 24 at Downtown Social LBK, 1711 Texas Ave. Leading 3rd Wheel are Dustin Garrett, lead guitar and vocals; Will Boreing, lead guitar and vocals; and Lindsay Boreing, vocals. Filling out the band are Jose Barcenas, bass and vocals; Johnny Hughes, keyboards and vocals; and Alex Sanchez, drums.

Acoustic solo artist Kindle Hunt will open the show at 8 p.m.; 3rd Wheel follows at 9:30 p.m.

There is a $5 cover for standing-room-only and bar seating; tables seating four are limited, but can be reserved for $50. Only fans age 21 and older are admitted.

Michael Martin Murphey sings Cowboy Christmas

Recording artist Michael Martin Murphey will perform his 25th annual Cowboy Christmas Concert in shows at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 and 30 at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave.

Murphey, 73, followed such hits as “Wildfire” with three albums of “Cowboy Songs” in the 1990s. He was inducted into the Western Music Association Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

Annual Carol of Lights planned

With the flip of a switch, more than 25,000 red, white and gold lights will illuminate 18 buildings around Texas Tech’s Memorial Circle, Engineering Key and Broadway campus during the university’s 60th annual Carol of Lights on Nov. 30.

A carillon concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. that night, with the Carol of Lights ceremony commencing at 7 p.m. at Tech’s Science Quadrangle. Prior to the lights being turned on, the Tech Trombone Choir, directed by Jim Decker, will accompany the Tech Combined Choirs.

The holiday ceremony finds The Masked Rider, a Saddle Tramps torch processional and the High Riders leading visitors from the University Seal, west of Broadway and University Avenue, along a route lighted by luminariasCQ that leads around Memorial Circle and on to the Science Quadrangle.

Lights framing the multiple Tech buildings will be turned on from dusk (approximately 6:30 p.m.) to midnight every night from Nov. 30 through Jan. 1, 2019.

Traditional Christmas play at CATS

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” by Barbara Robinson, will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30-Dec. 1 and Dec. 7, 9 and 14-15 at the CATS Playhouse, 2257 34th St. (CATS is Children and Adults’ Theatrical Studio.)

Co-direction is by Izzy Klafka and Mickie Klafka.

Roberson, Aguilar in new Frenship musical

The hit 1934 stage musical “Anything Goes,” with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, will be staged at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, with 2:30 p.m. matinees on Dec. 1 and 2, at the Frenship High School Performing Arts Center, 902 Dowden Road in Wolfforth. The original book was by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, but it was heavily revised by Howard Lindsay and Russel►CQ◄ Crouse.

Direction is by Jake Lierman. Amy Moss is musical director, and Scott Carter will conduct the orchestra. Choreographers are Courtney Ferguson, Melissa Oakeley and Jennifer Smith.

The 2017 FHS production of “Cinderella” found student actors Sierra Roberson and Noah Aguilar going on to win High School Musical Theatre Awards, sponsored by Dallas Summer Musicals. “Anything Goes” sees Aguilar and Roberson return as Billy and Reno, respectively. Additional cast members include: Coby Rogers as Evelyn Oakleigh, Eve Helak as Hope Harcourt, Josh Fredenburg as Moonface Martin, Macee Maddox as Erma, Kobie Jackson as Mrs. Harcourt and Austin Higby as Elisha Whitnet.

Riders in the Sky headline Cactus

Recording act Riders in the Sky, specializing in a mixture of traditional western/cowboy music and comedy, will perform two concerts at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave.

Current members are Ranger Doug (Douglas B. Green), guitar and vocals; Too Slim (Fred Labour), bass and vocals; Woody Paul (Paul Chrisman), fiddle and vocals; and Joey the Cow-Polka King (Joseph Miskulin), accordion and vocals.
