Democratic Newark mayor Cory Booker on Wednesday kicked off a new video campaign by the Human Rights Campaign that seeks to raise support for same sex marriage across the nation.

"I’m Mayor Cory Booker and I support marriage equality," he says in the first video for Americans for Marriage Equality.

"I support it because from my earliest of ages I made a pledge that we will be a nation with liberty and justice for all. I support marriage equality because I believe in the 14th Amendment: ‘equal protection under the law.’ And, I support marriage equality because I support love and in this nation we need a lot more of it."

The video campaign comes after lawmakers in North Carolina and Minnesota approved constitutional amendments to prohibit same sex marriage, giving voters a chance to ratify or reject the amendments in the 2012 general elections.

“Americans for Marriage Equality will help drive the national conversation on marriage equality at a critical time as the issue moves through the electoral, legislative, and judicial arenas,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “It’s critically important that we continue a conversation with Americans from all walks of life on this issue of fundamental equality.”

HRC plans to roll out more video campaigns targeting specific audiences, such as Republicans for Marriage Equality and African-Americans for Marriage Equality. In early October, Democratic Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley kicked off another video campaign by HRC, Marylanders for Marriage Equality.
