Teen NC Firefighter Dies On Way to Water Rescue

East Side firefighter Dakota Snavely, who was only 17, died Sunday in a vehicle wreck after being dispatched to a water rescue in Stanly County.

A teenage firefighter from a small central North Carolina city was killed in a vehicle wreck this past weekend while en route to a water rescue.

The East Side Volunteer Fire Department in Albemarle has announced on Facebook that firefighter Dakota Snavely, who was only 17 years told, had been dispatched Sunday night to a water rescue at Morrow Mountain State Park when the crash occurred.

Snavely, who volunteered with the East Side department for three years, had been at a friend's house in Oakboro when the call came in.

Investigators say a truck hauling chickens lost control on Highway 205 just outside Oakboro, and the young firefighter was killed when his vehicle hit the truck.

The incident is under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

"Please say a prayer for his family, his fire family, and this community," East Side Chief Andy Efird wrote in the Facebook post.
