Many charged with Md. bear hunting violations

MOUNT NEBO — From Monday through Thursday, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged 16 individuals with hunting bears over bait. The charge carries a fine of $450. Information about fine payments and court dates was obtained from the online Maryland Judiciary Case Search where available.

 Other charges during the bear hunt included use of an off-road vehicle in a restricted area, Robert Henry Walls, 64, Centreville; having a loaded weapon in a vehicle, Johnny Allen Crites, 41, Queen Anne.

In a case not related to the bear season, officers on patrol near Oldtown charged three Anne Arundel County men with multiple hunting infractions on Oct. 19.

Jason Dana Calloway, 29, Zachary Ryan Janikiewicz, 23, and Daniel Avis Hackman, 36 — all of Glen Burnie — were cited for hunting without a Maryland license and hunting during a closed season. The three men also were issued warnings for failure to wear blaze orange and failure to possess a secondary form of identification.

Officers arrived at 11 a.m. at in the vicinity of Martins Mountain Lane after a citizen complained that the hunters were using rifles during muzzleloader season.

Janikiewicz was said to be hunting with a shotgun with rifled slugs and Hackman with a 30-30 lever action rifle. Calloway allegedly shot a deer with his muzzleloader and then a .45-caliber handgun. The three are scheduled  Dec. 12 in Allegany County District Court.
