UPDATE: The Steelers are set to sign Donte Moncrief
PITTSBURGH — The Steelers are set to open NFL free agency with 8 unrestricted players hitting the market, at time of writing.
Eli Rogers, Jordan Berry and others are back. L.J. Fort is gone to the Philadelphia Eagles. All are getting the paydays of their lives to date.
In an exception to the rule of recent years, the Steelers agreed to a deal with a first-tier free agent on the last full day of the legal tampering period, brining in former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Steven Nelson. According to 9News in Denver, they also made an offer to Bradley Roby, who left the Denver Broncos for the Houston Texans.
The league year officially begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, which is when all the reported moves we’ve heard about the past few days become official. And while typically Pittsburgh doesn’t do too much right then, nothing about this offseason has been normal. As the window opens all the way up we’ll get you set with where the Steelers stand with their own free agents, how much money they have to try and keep them and offer a look at the best of who’s left out there.
(This post is being updated as players re-sign with the team.)
Steelers cap space: $14,288,259
That’s projected, by OverTheCap.com. It’s also quite a bit more than the team has taken into free agency in recent years.
Steelers unrestricted free agents (by snap %):
Coty Sensabaugh
Justin Hunter
Darrius Heyward-Bey
Stevan Ridley
L.T. Walton
Nat Berhe
General manager Kevin Colbert restated his preference to retain the team’s only players when he was speaking at the Combine late last month. He also said he finds it works well when players get to test the market first and come back to the team knowing they’ve found their league-wide valuation.
The restricted free agents who’ve been tendered
Meaning even if they do get offers tomorrow that the Steelers would get the chance to match or better those offers.
B.J. Finney
Xavier Grimble
Who they re-signed
Ramon Foster
Anthony Chickillo
Jordan Berry
Eli Rogers
Daniel McCullers
So the Steelers have their entire offensive line, less the traded Marcus Gilbert, and their top three outside linebackers back for next season.
The Steelers confirmed Wednesday afternoon that they received a sixth-round pick, No. 207 overall, for Gilbert.
