With storms Atiyah and Brendan hitting the UK at all angles this month, we’re dreaming of the best winter sun travel destinations to enjoy the sun in the depths of winter.

After all, it’s about this time of year that we all crawl under the duvet, to dream about happier, brighter times, or otherwise look forward to booking our holidays to the most luxurious travel spots of 2020 for the summer.

So, if the idea of lounging on pearlescent white beaches and sipping cocktails at sunset sounds more your cup of tea, here are our top picks for the winter sun destinations you - and your Instagram - should have on your radar this season:

Europe might not be the immediate winter sun destination that comes to mind when booking your holidays, but did you know that Cyprus has the warmest winters in the Mediterranean, with average temperatures reaching around 23 C during the day?

Whether you’re into nature and wellness retreats or simply want to sit by the pool all day with a cocktail and platter of local, fresh fruit, there’s plenty on offer for travellers to the island. We suggest visiting the Tombs of the Kings or hiking along the Akamas Forest Nature trail during the morning and soaking up the sunshine on Nissi beach before tucking into endless fish dishes at Pyxida Fish Tavern in Nicosia.

Our top tip? To book a holiday in Cyprus, Amara is a must-stay located a 19-minute walk from the Amathus Ruins and a short drive to Castella Beach in Limssol.

Well versed travellers will be all too aware that the luxurious city in the United Arab Emirates is one of the most sought-after locations with it modern architecture, buzzing nightlife, all-you-can eat brunches, artificial islands and the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa.

Hidden in the mid-Atlantic, Cape Verde is the world's best kept secret when it comes to volcanic archipelagos and winter sun spots.

With endless sunshine in November (the weather rarely budges from the upper 20C throughout the year) and just over a six-hour flight time from the UK, Cape Verde has a fascinating colonial heritage, with Portugal first making its roots there in 1462.

The island rises to the conical summit of Pico do Fogo mountain at an altitude of 9,281 feet, and invites travellers to visit the Chã das Caldeiras village, located inside the volcanoes crater. For those less inclined for a hike, Cape Verde offers several island-hopping opportunities visiting the likes of São Vicente, Santo Antão, Santiago, Fogo and Sal.
