Charlestown and Oldham County claim Athlete of the Week honors

Charlestown football's Marion Lukes won more than 75 percent of the votes in this week's Southern Indiana Athlete of the Week competition. Oldham County cross country runner Jacob Brizendine ran away with the Louisville Metro Athlete of the Week vote.

Lukes, a senior, carried the ball 28 times for 347 yards to lead the Pirates to a win over North Harrison on Sept. 7. He beat out New Albany football's Devon Gummer and Austin Oppel and Providence football's Kaden Williams. Gummer, a senior, caught 10 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to Bedford North Lawrence. Oppel, a sophomore, ran 253 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries. Williams, a senior, tallied 203 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Clarksville.

Brizendine, a senior, won the Rumble through the Jungle at Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve in 16 minutes, 56.70 seconds. The other nominees he beat out include Assumption volleyball's Anna DeBeer, Holy Cross football's Gavin Foushee and Southern football's Dylan Ready. DeBeer, a junior, had 11 kills in the Rockets' win over Mercy in the championship match of the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Foushee, a senior, had five catches for 124 yards and three touchdowns along with a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown in a win at Bethlehem. Ready, also a senior, ran for a touchdown, threw a touchdown pass and had a receiving touchdown in a win over Seneca.
