TCSO: 1 dead following deputy-involved shooting in Sperry

SPERRY, Okla. (KTUL) — The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Sperry near North Madison Avenue and East 76th Street North on Wednesday.

The sheriff's office says around 10:15 p.m. deputies were sent to the caller's home. She said she fell asleep on her recliner and woke up to find her ex-boyfriend, Terry Lee Cockrell, standing over her.

She said Cockrell was armed and in the backyard of her home.

When Deputy Mic Bonin found Cockrell in the backyard, he tried to get him to stop, but Cockrell ran into the woods behind the house. The deputy deployed his taser, but it didn't latch onto Cockrell's coat.

During the food chase, Bonin told Cockrell multiple times to stop running and show his hands. He told the deputy there was a gun in his pocket and that he wanted the deputy to shoot him.

Bonin fired his gun at him when Cockrell reached for his pocket. He died at the scene.

Deputy Bonin has been put on administrative leave pending an investigation. He's been with the sheriff's office for the past 13 years.

The back door of the woman's home showed evidence that Cockrell had broken into her house.

This is not the first time TCSO has been sent to the woman's home for domestic violence calls, according to the sheriff's office.

Cockrell was recently arrested on Dec. 26, 2018 for violating a protective order.
