Tim Cook to Receive First ADL ‘Courage Against Hate’ Award

The Anti-Defamation League has announced that Apple CEO Tim Cook will be the first recipient of its “Courage Against Hate” Award.

In a press release on Wednesday, the ADL highlighted Cook’s vocal support for social issues and his contributions to social initiatives, as well as Apple’s ongoing encouragement of charitable funding.

Cook will accept the award at the ADL’s “Never Is Now Summit” on anti-Semitism and Hate on Dec. 3 in New York City. The Apple executive will also be giving the keynote address at the League’s event.

“During a time where technology is being used to spread hate, Tim has been a trailblazer in combating it on Apple’s platforms,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL’s CEO, and National Director.

Cook has long been a staunch and vocal advocate for social issues. He has spoken up in defense of the LGBTQ community and has clashed with the Trump administration on immigration policies numerous times.

The Apple executive also penned a letter to Apple employees that addressed the controversial “Unite the Right” demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia. In the later, Cook took an active stance against violence, hate groups, and bigotry.

In the wake of that event, Cook also pledged that Apple would donate $1 million to both the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

As far as charitable donations, the ADL also praised Cook for creating a fund matching program for Apple employees who donate to charities. The Cupertino tech giant regularly makes contributions in the wake of natural disasters as well.

The ADL said it created the aware to recognize private sector leaders “who are dedicated to fighting hate for good, boldly use their personal and professional brands to that end and inspire others to actively work to make the world a better place.”

Cook has also been given various other awards over the years, including the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award; the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights’ “Ripple of Hope” award; Newseum’s Free Expression Award; and the Human Rights Award from the Birmingham Metro Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

“He is a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ community and immigrants’ rights while denouncing racist vitriol like the events in Charlottesville and we are proud and excited to present Tim with third aware,” Greenblatt said.
