BATON ROUGE - Elaine Edwards, the ex-wife of former governor Edwin Edwards,  passed away at age 89.

Edwards died at her daughter's home in Denham Springs Monday. Edwards; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Schwartzenburg; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Myrl and Errol Schwartzenburg and her brother Frank Schwartzenburg.

Edwards served as the first lady alongside her husband from 1972 to 1980 and again from 1984 to 1988. Elaine was also briefly appointed to the US senate in 1972 after the death of Allen Ellender.

She vacated the position after a new senator was elected.

Elaine and Edwin split in 1989 after 40 years of marriage.

A memorial service will be held from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. May 21 at the Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home in Baton Rouge. Charitable donations may be made to Children's Hospital of New Orleans, the Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.
